Setting variants for layout blocks and each of its descendants manually was counter-intuitive and a bit annoying to be honest. But we didn’t want to lose the possibility of carefully choosing which blocks should be affected by variants and which will only have a global value. So we joined all configs together in an improved popover where you can set up all document’s children easily with a few clicks.
